VIRTUAL Retail
Role: Experience Lead
Circa: 2017
We collaborated with the Lowe’s Innovation Lab to create their first Augmented Reality experience in their retail apps. At the time there was not an easy way for shoppers to visualize products in their space before buying them. This meant returned products, shipping fees and unhappy customers.
We began with the key insight that shopper take weeks, if not months, to purchase high-value items such as furniture and appliance. They cannot visualize if the products will fit their space or match its surrounding. They are simply lacking the confidence to make a decision. With that we began brainstorming on how to seamlessly help shoppers visualize products in their space.
What If
Shoppers were encouraged to try the visualizer.
What IF
They were immersed in a quick tutorial.
AND
Got comfortable placing products in their space.
WHAT IF
Placing products was as simple as a pinch and drop.
AND
They could see the product info without leaving.
WHAT if
Adding to cart was one as simple as one tap.
Over the span of 3 months we transformed the way shoppers purchase high-value items. In just a few taps we helped consumers visualize products in their space, increased conversion and reduced returns. A huge win for both Lowe’s and their shoppers.

The PROCESS
As we explored adding this new feature into the existing shoppers’ journey, we wanted to ensure the integration was seamless. We examined the most intuitive entry points, a simple onboarding experience, a contextual guide to help users place products in their space, and an immersive product exploration experience. Last but not least, we ensured a way for shoppers to capture their explorations and a seamless handoff between the mixed reality environment back onto their shopping cart.
